Common Holiday Home Insurance Claims & How to Avoid Them

C

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! But unfortunately, it’s also the time of year when traditional celebrations can also lead to home insurance risks that result in costly claims or even injury!

Today, we’re going to cover some of the most common home insurance claims over the holidays as well as how you can avoid them.

Common Holiday Home Insurance Claims

Here are some examples of home insurance claims we see a rise in over the holiday season:

  • Christmas tree fires
  • Cooking fires
  • Candle fires
  • Fires from blocked chimneys
  • Property theft
  • Fires from overloaded electrical equipment

Now that we’ve discussed some of the common claims during this season, let’s talk about helping you avoid them!

Avoiding Common Holiday Home Insurance Risks

First, keep fire safety at the front of your mind.

When you’re placing decorations around your house, be sure to keep them clear of heat sources, including electrical sources or candles and fireplaces. You’ll also want to make sure you have a fire extinguisher on each floor of the home and that you know how to use it.

It’s also a great time of year to get your chimney inspected! Experts recommend having your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year. But if you use it twelve months a year, even more often is encouraged.

As far as avoiding home insurance claims for theft, there are special considerations over the holiday season. To discourage theft all year long, consider adding motion sensor lights outside your home. Always make sure your doors are locked, and don’t store gifts in plain sight to passerbys.

If you’re having packages delivered to your house, make sure you take them inside as soon as you can. If they’re delivered while you’re away from home, consider having a trusted neighbor hold onto them for you until you’re back.
